John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation renews their support for the Greek Teacher Programme 2019

In 2019, the Greek Teacher Programme will once again be supported in part by the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation as part of the Foundation's commitment to continue the benevolent legacy of John S. Latsis in the areas of education, science, culture, health, social welfare, and community development.

This will be the fourth consecutive year that the Foundation will help CERN to make the Greek Teacher Programme possible. This grant will allow 36 high-school science teachers to participate in CERN's physics training held during the summer of 2019. The four day training consists of a series of lectures and workshops given by CERN scientists, hands-on activities and dedicated sessions on how teachers can bring modern physics into the school classroom. Teachers have the opportunity to engage more students in scientific studies and careers and therefore play a crucial role in nurturing our future generation of scientists. The goal of the Programme is therefore to help teachers keep abreast of the latest developments in the field, so that they can transmit a high-level of education to their students.

The Greek Teacher Programme was first launched in 2008 as part of CERN’s National Teacher Programmes, a series of international courses offered on-site at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. This Programme is an example of CERN’s overall education efforts to promote the teaching of modern physics and increase knowledge exchange between teachers and scientists. So far, CERN has trained more than 11,000 high school teachers from more than 70 countries in modern physics.
